Meet Shilpa! Aubrey and Shirley met Shilpa a year ago at the 2018 New Providence Street Fair. After that chance encounter, the rest is history. We believed that Shilpa would be a great addition to the team and she has exceeded our expectations! Her open and welcoming style has earned her the respect and love of the students at UNWIND. Shilpa always has a smile on her face and brings such positive energy to the studio. Her Wednesday morning (6:00 AM) power class has taken several of our students to new levels with their practice. We are lucky to have her as a part of the UNWIND tribe and community.
Shilpa was surrounded by yoga all her life and in 2003 became an avid practitioner while living in Washington, D.C. Throughout several moves, yoga proved to be a constant in her life. In 2011, after moving to New York City, Shilpa decided to deepen her practice and passion by becoming a 200-hour Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT). Shilpa had the privilege of studying at OM Yoga Center under world-renowned teachers led by Cyndi Lee. There, Shilpa not only learned the basic practice and principles of yoga, but also studied anatomy, yoga philosophy and meditation. She has also attended various workshops with leading experts in the field and assisted in events such as the Yoga Solstice in Times Square and Self Magazine's Workout in the Park.
Shilpa teaches Vinyasa yoga to students of all levels who are looking to build strength and flexibility and learn about proper body alignment within poses. Her down-to-earth approach allows students to feel comfortable, regardless of experience or physical ability.
You can find Shilpa in the studio on Friday mornings for her 7:00 AM Power Up Your Morning class! Kickstart your morning with this energetic flow class. Though quick-paced, this class is open to everyone and can be modified for any level to give you the energy to conquer the second half of the week.
What style of yoga do you practice and/or teach?
Do you have some advice for people who are first getting into yoga?
Give it more than one chance and try different styles—it takes a few classes before you find your flow.
What do you love most about teaching yoga?
I love sharing that feeling of both empowerment and calmness that you can achieve through an asana practice. Watching a person transform from how they felt when they walked into a class versus how they walk out is really fulfilling, and I'm happy to be a small part of that.
Do you have additional certifications?
I received my 200-hour RYT certification in 2012.
What would be your perfect day?
Waking up after a full night of sleep, having a hot cup of coffee, and going to a challenging yoga class. Then spending the rest of the day with my family enjoying a beautiful day outside.
